You’re likely to need your National Insurance number for a range of things throughout your life, the most important being National Insurance contributions and tax. So, it’s important to be able to find it when you need it.
How do I find my National Insurance number online?
If you already have a personal tax account, then this can be an easy way to both view your National Insurance number as well as print a letter from HMRC that contains your number. All you have to do is log in to the Government Gateway, and if you don’t already have an account then you can register on the government website.
How do I find my National Insurance number on a document?
You will have received a number of documents throughout your life that contain your National Insurance number. Just before you turned 16, you would have received your National Insurance number through the post, either as a letter or a card. Since then, any payslips, P60’s or letters about tax, pensions or benefits you have received will contain your National Insurance number.
Can I ask HMRC for my National Insurance number?
If you are unable to find your National Insurance number online or on any documents, then you can contact HMRC. To do this, you can either:
Fill in a form called CA5403 and send it to the address on the form
Contact the National Insurance numbers helpline and answer some security questions
HMRC will then send you a letter in the post containing your National Insurance number.
What do I do if I don’t have a National Insurance number?
If you don’t have a National Insurance number, then you must apply for one if you:
Are a resident or present in Great Britain and are over the age of 16
Are employed or self-employed, or
Wish to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions
You can apply for a National Insurance number on the government website.
Can I find my pension using my National Insurance number?
If you have any old or lost pensions, one way of tracking them down is to use the government’s online tracking tool. And if you are unable to find them using this tracker, then you may be able to find them using your National Insurance number. This can be done by:
Sending your NI number to HMRC to find out if you opted out of SERPS
Sending your NI number to a past employer to ask for details about your pension scheme administrator
